The first step to becoming a Naturopathic Doctor is education, including an undergraduate degree with pre-requisite sciences from a recognized university, followed by four years of full-time study at an accredited naturopathic medical program, successful completion of the Naturopathic Physicians Licensing Examinations (NPLEX) and additional provincial or state regulatory board exams, as required.

To become a qualified ND one must graduate from a naturopathic medical program accredited by the Council on Naturopathic Medical Education (CNME). Individuals completing correspondence programs are not recognized by any of the provincial/territorial/state regulatory authorities and do not qualify for licensure or membership with the national/ provincial/territorial/state naturopathic associations in Canada or the United States.
